Never mind. I figured it out. I thought that the Category module was displaying the images. I found that the Product List module with the option Show sub-categories checked was required to get what i want.

I do have one question left for replicating the way your demo site displays the category list with sub-category image links at the top. How do you get the current category name to display above the images? I see nothing in the template for this.

I discovered the answer. At the end of the template you have some code that renames the module title to the selected Category. That was not working for me because I was using a DNN container that did not display the module title.
