It's normally needed for textbox custom fields that affect pricing (e.g. textbox + price modifier rule). When the user changes the value in the textbox (e.g. amount to donate), the browser isn't notified until the user clicks on the page outside the textbox, but users don't always know to do that and in this case using an Update button makes it more explicit for usability reasons.
